We have a comprehensive chemical application program. We use chemicals in a safe, responsible and educated manner and are constantly looking for ways to improve this program keeping public safety and economics always in mind. We have a small list of chemicals that we use in different ways for different situations. This page will give some background into these chemicals and hopefully provide some education as to their properties.

The public in and around the Alamosa Mosquito Control District should be aware of what we apply and how. There are two main methods of application, aerial and ground units. Aerial application by plane will spray usually malathion for adulticide purposes or BTi for larvacide purposes. This plane is red and white-not yellow. Commonly, yellow crop dusters are flying at various times (usually in the mornings) and are easily confused with the company that we use. We also fly in the evening for adulticide and at other various times for larvacide. We test for West Nile at least twice a week, and if it has been detected, we will implement our West Nile Shock and Awe program which involves sending out the plane more frequently than usual to try and reduce the mosquito count, thus reducing the risk of human exposure.

The other adulticide application methods that we use are fogging trucks, backpack sprayers and a thermal fogger. They spray a permethrin-based chemical with the common name of Aqualuer. You will see these trucks operating in the evenings primarily, unless West Nile has been detected and then you may see them earlier and more frequent. The backpacks and thermal fogger are used to treat smaller areas such as around homes and other specific sites. They spray Kontrol 4-4™ a permethrin based chemical, or sometimes Aqualuer.

Water application involves larvacide only. Various chemicals are employed in different situations. Usually these situations are based around what type of larvae are present in the water. Younger or smaller larva will be susceptible to BTi (either liquid or granular forms), older larva will require Agnique MMF (micro molecular film.) We also use 30 day mosquito dunks commonly called Altosid ™  briquets which are S-Methoprene based.

Links to the left of the page will take you to each individual chemical, where you may find label and MSDS information.
