Our integrated pest management program includes:

  • Surveillance of larval and adult mosquitoes populations
  • Pest thresholds established

Where We Find Larva

  • Overflow ponds
  • Flood irrigated fields
  • Water in discarded tires
  • Discarded refuse ie. soft drink containers and steel cans
  • Rain gutters
  • Bird baths
  • Kid’s swimming pools, etc. These sites are monitored and once larvae are found in sufficient numbers, treatment will be applied.

Why We Control Larva

This is the most efficient time for control, because:

  • Larvae are in high numbers
  • Larvae are confined in habitat
  • Control practices are inexpensive

 How We Control Larva

A naturally occurring soil bacterium ( BTi), is used to control the larvae. It specifically targets mosquitoes. Once applied, it is slow to release and can recharge with habitat drying and re-wetting.

What You Can Do

Reduce Mosquito Habitat

  • Dispose of refuse containing water.
  • Keep grass & shrubs trimmed.
  • Cut down weeds.

Surveillance

  • Look for places mosquitoes might lay eggs.
  • Look for mosquito larva.
  • Determine if chemical treatment is needed.

 Control

Apply approved* chemical insecticides and sprays.
*check with drug stores or any store that has a lawn & garden center.

Education
  • Become familiar with mosquito breeding places. Locate possible sites around your home, yard and neighborhood.

 Yard and Home Checklist

  • Get rid of old tires, tin cans, buckets, drums, bottles and any water holding containers, including any refuse items around the outside of the house that are capable of holding water.
  • Fill in or drain any low places (puddles, ruts) in yard.
  • Keep drains, ditches and culverts clean of weeds and trash so water will drain properly.
  • Repair leaky pipes and outside faucets. Clean clogged rain gutters.
  • Empty plastic wading pool at least once a week and store it indoors when not in use.
  • Change the water in bird baths and plant pots or drip trays at least once each week.
  • Review this checklist after significant rainfall or application of irrigation water.
